What To Expect When Getting Surgical Hair Replacement

Updated: 6 days ago

Pursuing surgical hair replacement is a daunting idea for some people, and here’s what you can expect if you wish to move forward with this type of procedure.

What’s The First Step in Getting Surgical Hair Replacement?

It begins with a consultation. You’ll make an appointment with a surgical hair replacement specialist who will help evaluate if you’re a suitable candidate. Some preliminary steps may have to be taken first, such as dealing with any current medications. Your budget may also factor into the extent of the transplant.

With those considerations squared away, you will have to consider your schedule. While this kind of procedure has been made quite safe in recent years, there is still a brief initial recovery period at home, varying from two to five days usually.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There are many causes, from stress to pharmaceutical drug use to aging or vitamin deficiencies. Males are much more susceptible to hair loss than females and are over five times more likely to seek treatment.

It is even possible that your body’s own defenses against illness can be the culprit. Your immune system may lay siege to the follicles on your head, as if they were an infection, causing patches of thinning hair on your scalp. This unfortunate condition is called alopecia areata.

Another possibility is genetics. Hereditary hair loss goes by the name of androgenic alopecia. When inheriting this condition, the follicles start to shrink until they cannot produce hair. For a woman, this means the hair on her scalp will become less abundant. For a man, it more often takes the form of a receding hairline.

Going To My First Surgical Appointment, What Will Happen?

You will be given a local anesthetic. The procedure will take several hours and you will not experience pain. The surgeon and technicians will do their best to ensure your comfort as follicles are harvested from the back of your head and placed where they are needed.

After the surgical process is complete, you will receive detailed instruction on how to care for your scalp on both the donor and receiving sections in the days to come.

Usually, but not always, only one of these treatments is necessary.

How Soon Will My New Hair Look Natural?

While the results are intended to be permanent, the transformation is not automatic. The transplanted hair will fall out in a few weeks after the procedure. This is part of the process. In the next few months, the relocated follicles will start producing hair.

During this period, it is important to ensure your scalp’s health and to follow your clinic’s post-procedure recommendations, to avoid inflammation of the treated area. Sometimes a temporary loss of some of the original hair where new follicles have been donated happens, but this condition rarely lasts. Since you are receiving your own hair, your skin will gradually accept this surgical change.

Is There an Alternative to Using My Own Hair?

Employing follicles from another host is not recommended. A hair follicle is an organ, and organs are prone to rejecting hosts of foreign bodies. Hair from a different person will rarely fully match the natural wave or colour of your own locks. The blend will be better using your own.
